How to Stop a Sniffing Tic Disorder

Jan 09, 2023

It's infuriating - our nose - isn't it?

My nose was the first Tic that I had when I was 13. I used to wrinkle it, incessantly.

I ticced that nose hundreds of times a day.

As a young boy, I was also bullied - labelled as "rabbit" and "twitchy."

Maybe you can relate to name-calling if you are ticcing, and are looking for some relief.

At Motor Tic Mastery, we support our clients to relate to their bodies better, release emotions, and clear any subtle layers of trauma. Our approach to Tics is behavioural and holistic, not pharmaceutical in nature.

A sniffing tic is a type of tic disorder characterized by the repetitive, involuntary sniffing of the nose.

Is that what's happening to you or your child? Is it repetitive? Can you control it?

Most people say they can control and 'hold' a tic for a short period of time, but this is not a long-term solution. if you are constantly trying to 'hold' tics back then you're creating 2 movements in your body and psyche! One of wanting to tic, and then one trying not to tic. You're creating more work for yourself.

We don't heal Tics by fighting the tic.

We learn to stop tics by understanding the underlying cause, changing behaviours, releasing stuck emotions, and learning to express in a new way.

A Sniffing Tic is characterised by a 'pulling up' movement. Try it now.

It's as if you're trying to 'pull' something up and away. You're trying to tic to move away from something else.

This is natural in all Tics. We have built this unconscious habit to move in a new way, because what is on the other side (or if we don't tic) feels EVEN WORSE.

We must learn to feel to heal.

Doctor's even regard Tics as neurological condition.

I don't. I see that all neurons are shaped, shifted and reprogrammed based on our consciousness. Neurons aren't stuck forever in the same constellation. You're always changing.

And so this can give hope. Trust that things can change, as I've witnessed again and again doing this work.

Next time you want to express thru a Sniffing Tic I want you to feel the edge of the uncomfortableness.

What does that mean?

Well, sometimes when we Tic we can't or don't notice it. We just do it. That's OK.

However, sometimes when we Tic we're more aware and we can feel the sensation - the urge - to tic.

This urge is our playing field.

It's with this urge that we learn to discover a new depth of feeling.

IN or BEHIND that urge is another feeling.

When we learn to feel what's behind that feeling, the reason 'why' we Tic can disappear.

Sometimes this depth of awareness and presence can take a while to cultivate, and sometimes it's quick.

But to heal from a sniffing tic is about taking the power back into yourself, and realising that YOU are the one doing the sniffing tic. No one else is doing it.

Claim that power back. And start seeing yourself deeper.

These can be difficult words to hear at the beginning. But over time, it's possible to see and realise this is truth.

No one else is doing it.

You are.

Somewhere in your psyche.

Because, why?

Ponder that.

Write your diary.

Take that question into a meditation.

Whatever it takes!

It's time for you to release this condition now.

And reachout if you need some support!

Wishing you well,

Peace,
