Highly Sensitive Children (HSC) & Motor Tics

Dec 31, 2022

As someone who lived with Tics for 20 years, I can relate to being (and still am) a very sensitive person.

I didn't understand what 'sensitivity' was as a child though, nor were there diagnoses available for such things in my childhood.

Highly sensitive children are those who are more sensitive to their environment and the people around them. They may be more easily overwhelmed by stimuli and may have a deeper emotional response to events and experiences. Here are some common characteristics of highly sensitive children:

  1. Highly sensitive to sensory stimuli: Highly sensitive children may be more sensitive to bright lights, loud noises, or certain textures and tastes. They may also be more sensitive to the emotions and moods of others.

  2. Emotionally reactive: Highly sensitive children may have a strong emotional response to events and experiences. They may be more prone to crying, anger, or fear in response to stimuli that may not affect other children as strongly.

  3. Intuitive and empathetic: Highly sensitive children may be more intuitive and able to pick up on subtle cues and emotions in others. They may also be more empathetic and able to feel the emotions of others.

  4. Deep thinkers: Highly sensitive children may be deep thinkers who enjoy exploring ideas and concepts in depth. They may also be more sensitive to injustice and may be more likely to advocate for others.

  5. Easily overwhelmed: Highly sensitive children may be more easily overwhelmed by stimuli and may need more time to process and adjust to new situations. They may also need more alone time and quiet time to recharge.

It is important to note that every child is unique and may exhibit some or none of these characteristics.

There is a potential relationship between being a highly sensitive child and experiencing tics. It is possible that highly sensitive children may be more prone to developing tics due to their heightened sensitivity and vulnerability to stress and anxiety. However, it is important to note that not all highly sensitive children will experience tics as every child deals with their sensitivity in different ways. For example, with kids who tic specifically express through movements in their body.

If you are concerned about your child's sensitivity or Tics, it is always a good idea to talk to a healthcare professional. At Motor Tic Mastery we offer tools and advice at the intersection of CBT, Embodiment Tools and Relaxation Practice.
